Isola Bella & the Myth of Lady Florence Trevelyan

Called the "Pearl of the Mediterranean", Isola Bella is the undisputed symbol of Taormina

  • From 28/07/2026
  • to 31/10/2026

Today it is a protected reserve and a widespread museum, but we owe the beauty of Isola Bella to a story of love and exile:

  1. The Royal Exile: In 1892, Scottish noblewoman Lady Florence Trevelyan (Queen Victoria's cousin) was removed from England for a scandalous affair with the future King Edward VII.
  2. The refuge in Taormina: Arriving in Sicily, Florence married the mayor of the city and purchased the then barren rock of Isola Bella to make it her private paradise.
  3. The first exotic garden: As a pioneer of botany, she planted extremely rare tropical plants on the island that today form a unique jungle, and built small stone pavilions (the "beehives") for bird watching.
